The September Shift: What This Month's Astrology Is Asking of You Abroad

There is no dramatic moment when a foreign country starts to feel like home. It happens in the small things, the ones you almost don't notice while they're happening. The coffee shop where they know your order. The walk you take the same way every Tuesday, without really deciding to. The way your body has quietly stopped bracing in certain rooms and certain languages, and you couldn't tell me exactly when that shift happened even if you tried.

September's astrology moves through this same kind of quiet. It doesn't ask you to overhaul your life abroad, and it isn't building toward some big reveal at the end of the month either. It asks you to notice what you've already built, go a little deeper into what's actually true underneath it, and then, closer to the end of the month, step forward with something more decisive. Here's how it unfolds.

The First Ten Days: Let the Dust Settle

If August felt disruptive, if something cracked open in how you see your life abroad or in what you're willing to keep pretending is fine, the beginning of September isn't asking you to fix any of it yet.

This is a settling window. Nothing dramatic is happening astrologically, and that's really the point of it. Whatever surfaced last month, whatever you understood about yourself that you can't quite unknow now, needs time to integrate before you act on it.

For a woman living abroad, that can be uncomfortable to sit with. So much of expat life trains you to keep moving, to solve the visa problem, learn the system, build the routine, prove to yourself and everyone watching that you're managing just fine. But not everything needs to be resolved by force. Some of it just needs to be left alone for a while, the way a bruise needs time before you can touch it without flinching.

September 10: Venus Moves Into Scorpio, and the New Moon in Virgo Arrives Alongside It

Two things happen on the same day, and together they set the tone for the rest of the month.

Venus Into Scorpio: The Invitation to Stop Performing Okayness

Venus governs what you're drawn to, what feels valuable, how you connect. When Venus moves into Scorpio, the surface stops being enough. Scorpio doesn't do small talk well. It wants what's real, even when what's real is complicated.

If you've spent months abroad performing a version of okayness, smiling through the homesickness, saying "it's such an adventure" when what you actually mean is "I'm exhausted and I don't know who to be here," this transit is an invitation to stop. Not to swing into performing crisis instead, but to stop skimming the surface of your own life and let yourself feel what's underneath it.

This shows up relationally too. You might find yourself less interested in the small talk that expat social life often runs on, and more drawn to the one or two people you can actually be honest with. That's not you becoming difficult. That's Venus in Scorpio doing exactly what it's meant to do.

New Moon in Virgo: A Reset in the Ordinary, Not the Extraordinary

Virgo is the sign of daily rhythm. The body. What you do every single day, whether or not anyone's watching. It doesn't care about grand gestures. It cares about the walk, the ritual, the small repeated thing that eventually becomes the shape of a life.

This is, I think, the truest thing about building a home somewhere new. It isn't the big decision to move that makes a place feel like yours, it's the thousand small, unremarkable repetitions that come after it. The market you go to on the same day each week. The way you've learned to order your coffee without translating it in your head first. The walk your body now takes without you steering it.

A New Moon in Virgo asks: which of those rituals have you actually built since you moved? And just as importantly, which ones are missing? Not because you haven't tried hard enough. Sometimes a ritual doesn't form because some part of you hasn't fully let itself believe it's staying.

One practical intention for this lunar cycle: choose one small, specific, repeatable thing that makes where you are feel a little more like yours. Not a resolution, not a five-point plan, just one ordinary thing you do on purpose, again and again, until your body stops treating this place like a stopover and starts treating it like home.

Mercury Into Libra: The Window for the Paperwork You've Been Avoiding

Mercury also shifts into Libra this same day, and it's worth mentioning even though it isn't the emotional center of the month, because it's genuinely useful. Libra is diplomatic, fair-minded, good at finding the right word for a delicate situation. Mercury there is a decent window for anything that requires tact and precision at once.

If you've been putting off the visa renewal, the residency paperwork, an email to a landlord or a lawyer that needs the right tone, this is a reasonable stretch to finally sit down and handle it. Not because the astrology makes it easier exactly, but because Mercury in Libra tends to help you find the diplomatic phrasing that gets bureaucratic things moving instead of stuck.

Mid-September: Staying With It

Between the New Moon and the end of the month, there isn't a major astrological event pulling focus, and that's worth naming, because it gives you permission to actually stay with whatever came up on the 10th instead of rushing past it.

This is a good stretch for the quieter work. Journaling about what Venus in Scorpio uncovered. Actually practicing the small ritual you chose at the New Moon, even on the days it feels like nothing. Noticing where you're still performing for people back home, or for the version of yourself who moved here with a very different picture of how this would go.

September 22–23: The Sun Enters Libra

The Libra Equinox brings a different kind of energy than the last two weeks: relational, balancing, oriented toward the people around you rather than the internal work you've been doing since the New Moon.

For an expat woman, Libra season often surfaces the question of belonging through other people rather than through place. Who do you actually feel like yourself with here? Where are you still performing balance instead of feeling it? This isn't a call to overhaul your social life, just an honest look at whether the relationships you've built abroad reflect who you actually are now, or who you were when you first arrived and were still finding your footing.

September 26: Full Moon in Aries

Full Moons bring things to a head. Aries is the sign of the self, unaccompanied, the part of you that existed before any relationship, any role, any place you've had to adapt to.

After weeks of depth work, quiet ritual, and relational reflection, this Full Moon asks something more direct of you. Where have you been waiting for permission, or for someone else to go first? Where have you been so busy holding space for everyone else's adjustment, your partner's new job, your kids' new school, your own performance of resilience, that your own voice has faded into the background?

This isn't about becoming loud for the sake of it. It's about trusting the part of you that knew who she was before any of this began, and letting her speak.

September 27–28: Mars Enters Leo

As the month closes, Mars moves into Leo, and with it comes a different kind of energy than the introspective pull of the last few weeks, more expressive, more willing to be seen.

If the New Moon in Virgo was about the quiet, private ritual, this is closer to its outward edge. Not a performance of confidence, just an ordinary kind of presence. Whatever daily practice you've been building since the 10th, this is a good window to let it be witnessed, by a friend, in a conversation, in the way you show up in a room instead of shrinking to match it.

The Thread Through All of It

None of this month's astrology is asking you to force anything. It isn't a call to relocate again, reinvent your routine overnight, or prove to anyone that you've adapted well enough. It's asking you to notice what's already true, quietly, underneath the version of your life you show people. What rituals have actually become yours. What you're still performing instead of feeling. Where your own voice went, somewhere in the middle of everyone else's adjustment to this new life.

Home doesn't arrive all at once. It gets built the same way everything worth having gets built, in the small, repeated, unglamorous things nobody else really sees.

If you want a clearer picture of what home was always supposed to feel like for you, for your chart specifically, for the particular way you move through the world, that's the work I do in a birth chart reading.
